An Explanation of AYP Adequate Yearly Progress

and Program Improvement Status

By now you have received the required letter from me informing you that the Intermediate School did not make AYP in Math for a second year. Under the Federal Law of No Child Left Behind parents must be notified 15 days before the start of school that as a Title I School (receiving Federal money), we have been placed on Program Improvement year one.  This means that we must continue our improvement efforts and focus in the areas identified.

The State has identified targets for the percentage of students that must score partially proficient, proficient, or advanced on the CSAP test.  These targets increase every 3 years with the intent of all schools in the country meeting 100% partially proficient, proficient or advanced by 2014.  The student scores are broken into subgroups. Every subgroup that has 30 or more students must make the target percentage for partially proficient, proficient, and advanced each year in order to be awarded AYP.

The State defined subgroups for the Intermediate school are:

Whole School, Native American, Hispanic, White, Economically Disadvantaged.  Some years Special Education and ELL are target subgroups if there are 30 or more students in the groups.  Other indicators that also must be met are 95% participation (students taking the test) and 1% of the students must score advanced.

Allof the target areas must be met or a school is not awarded AYP.  If this happens two consecutive years and the school receives Title I funds the school is placed on Program Improvement.  This requires a plan to address the areas of deficiency.  Once placed on Improvement the school must meet the AYP target, 2 consecutive years to be exited.

School of Choice is an option that parents must be informed of, however in Ignacio we do not have the School Choice option, within the District.

I realize this information can be confusing and I encourage you to visit the school anytime.  We are committed to improving our student achievement scores and elicit your help as parents.  Please feel free to contact me regarding questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathy Pokorney

Principal
